Lighthouse summary

The Great Fish Point is very close to Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape and it is one of South Africa’s smallest lighthouses. It still has a working light that casts a light out to sea for up to 32 nautical miles. It is also one of the four South African lighthouses that can provide visitor accommodation.

The locals have nicknames the “the short, red headed man, in a tuxedo” because of the way the is painted and it is located in the Great Fish River area of the Eastern Cape. Found right on the beach, it is a great place to base yourself for a lovely holiday.

Lighthouse description

When staying at this , guests will not be based at the itself but at the cottages close by. These have recently been developed to provide accommodation for tourists. There are two cottages each being able to accommodate a maximum of six guests. This is great for large families or groups of friends, and the prices are per cottage. The cottages are both self catered and there are magnificent views of the Indian Ocean.

The road to get to the houses is a dirt road turning off from the highway. This is a rough road and so after rain, it should only be used with a 4WD vehicle.

Port Alfred is a great seaside town to visit and is only about ten minutes drive from the cottages and . There are beaches, a great marina, a golf course and even a flight school. As it is on the beach the town also hosts an array of water based activities. This is a very popular place for local and international tourists alike.

If you are visiting in July then you will be able to catch the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. This event is the biggest performing arts event in South Africa and is a great day trip from the cottages.
