About the area
Nestled in the rugged landscape of the Scottish Highlands, the area around Lochinver and is steeped in history. The lighthouse itself, a sentinel since the late 19th century, stands as a historic beacon near the Point of Stoer. Visitors can delve into the past by exploring the ruins of Ardvreck Castle on the shores of Loch Assynt, a haunting reminder of the region's turbulent history. The nearby Calda House, though now a ruin, offers a glimpse into the grandeur of 18th-century life in the Highlands. Both are within a reasonable drive from Lochinver and provide a tangible connection to Scotland's storied past.
For those seeking indoor activities, the Lochinver area offers cozy opportunities to experience local culture and crafts. The Lochinver Mission, while providing practical services to the local community, also has facilities where visitors can learn about the area's maritime heritage. Art enthusiasts will appreciate the Highland Stoneware pottery, where beautiful ceramics are crafted and can be observed in the making. On a rainy Highland day, these indoor pursuits provide a warm and enriching respite.
The great outdoors is where the area truly shines, with activities for adventurers of all levels. Hiking trails abound, with the famous walk to the Old Man of Stoer, a striking sea stack, being a must-do for the breathtaking views it offers. Anglers will find plenty of opportunities for fishing in the numerous lochs and rivers, while the more daring might take to the sea for kayaking or sailing. The pristine beaches, such as Achmelvich and Clachtoll, offer a chance for tranquil relaxation or beachcombing in a serene setting.
Wildlife enthusiasts will find Lochinver and the Stoer area a haven for a variety of species. The coastal waters are home to seals, otters, and an array of seabirds, including puffins and guillemots. Inland, the rugged moorlands and hills support red deer and birds of prey like golden eagles and buzzards. Boat trips are available to take visitors out to see dolphins, porpoises, and even whales during the right season. The area's rich biodiversity is a highlight for nature lovers and photographers seeking to capture the essence of Scotland's wild beauty.
