Lighthouse summary

Built in 1874 and automated in 1969, East Brother Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse that now operates as a first class dinner, bed and breakfast with five rooms, located in San Francisco Bay off Point San Pablo. You can explore the pretty island and take in the marvelous views and that fine opiate, sea-air.

This lighthouse was named for the steamship California, which wrecked nearby on September 23, 1891

While only minutes from shore and less than an hour from San Francisco, this historic lighthouse is close enough for a weekend jaunt and yet a world away.

Lighthouse description

The former keeper's house began operating as a bed and breakfast in 1980 and offers guests a unique and elegant getaway. Day visitors may come to the island for a small fee to hang out and enjoy the vistas. Visitors can fully enjoy stunning, panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, Mount Tamalpais, and the Marin coastline with an abundance of wildlife.

Marin room is one of the five available rooms in the lighthouse, named for its stunning view on Mount Tamalpias toward San Rafael in Marin County. It offers unique decor and a queen-sized bed. The room is located off the Parlor on the second floor and has a private attached bathroom. Perfect for multiple-night stays, guests can enjoy champagne & hors d'oeuvres upon arrival. Other rooms in the lighthouse are the San Francisco room, which has a private attached half bath, the Two Sisters room with its romantic fireplace and the West Brother room, which also has a view of Mount Tamalpais. A smaller, more rustic room, known as Walter’s Quarters, is located in the fog signal building. This room, with a full-sized bed and nautical motif, is the most requested room for returning guests to the island.

After a full tour of the island taking in all of the buildings and being regaled with the history of the island and its life as a lighthouse up to the present day, visitors can enjoy a multi-course dinner with wine and a full gourmet breakfast the next morning.
