Lighthouse summary

Buchan Ness Lighthouse sits at Britain's most northeastern point in Peterhead, a busy whitefish port about an hour's drive from Aberdeen. Buchan Ness lighthouse was built by Robert Stevenson, and is one of the few remaining working lighthouses in Scotland.

The lighthouse is 118ft (36m) high, flashing a white light every 5 seconds which with the current lamp is visible for 28 nautical miles (52km). The former lighthouse keepers' cottages have been converted to self catering accommodation.

Lighthouse description

Two well-equipped rental cottages, Skerry and Dundonnie, sit at its base, each with two bedrooms, a bath, a kitchen and a fireplace. The cottages are child-friendly, but some of the area's footpaths may not be. There is no access to the working lighthouse, but be sure to visit the nearby ruins of Slains Castle, said to have inspired "Dracula."

Skerry is a beautifully renovated lighthousekeeper's cottage at the base of Buchan Ness Lighthouse, the most north-easterly point in Scotland. Skerry cottage has a bright, airy galley kitchen with cooker, grill, fridge, microwave and coffee- maker. The kitchen table seats 4 comfortably and is a great place to sit and have your morning coffee. The living room is equipped with TV and DVD player. Skerry cottage has two bedrooms, one double with a king- size bed, the second with two single beds.  

The equally beautiful cottage Dundonnie has a large dining room which seats up to 8 people round the table. The kitchen is fully equiped with a dishwasher, split level oven/grill and coffee maker. Dundonnie Cottage has a modern cozy living room with a sea view and a cole fire, a main bedroom with a king-size bed and twin beds in the second bedroom.

Ours is a family-run and owned business which started over 13 years ago when we bought the island including the land and light keepers' cottages surrounding the lighthouse, from the previous owners.
Buchanness lighthouse is owned and operated by the Northern lighthouse board - It is still a working lighthouse
Designed by Robert Stevenson, and completed in 1827.
The cottages were built at the same time, and although we've preserved as many of the original features as possible, hopefully, we've achieved our aim ,to create a modern ,comfortable home from home environment for our guests , many of whom come back year after year, and feel more like family .

    Disappointed

    A beautiful location but the property was run down and not as it was described. The sofas were old and sunken, the king mattress springs could be felt when laying down. There was a smoke alarm that has been disabled in the kitchen and utensils that were burned and melted. The towels were threadbare and the general condition of the property was worn. We had booked for 2 nights but left after the first night. It’s a shame as the location is unique. Hope the issues get remedied.

    Sorry that you and your husband had such an unfavorable experience during your short stay at Buchanness Lighthouse, Skerry Cottage.

    There was a fat splatter on the kitchen wall behind the cooker and two charred kitchen utensils that seemed connected. We have washed the affected wall, but as the paint is matte emulsion, washing doesn't have any effect. Therefore, we are planning to install a splashback behind the cooker. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

    The fire alarm wasn't disconnected; it was just the casing that had come off, and it has now been replaced. There are fully functioning fire alarms in all rooms.

    Regarding the dirty windows, we are located right next to the sea on the most northeastern point of Scotland. Windy conditions often blow salt onto everyone's windows. It is one of the trade-offs of living in such a beautiful but exposed location.

    It is a pity that you didn't contact me before your arrival, even if you arrived late and left early the next morning without any notification, especially considering that you had my contact details beforehand.

    It seems strange to me that you managed to conduct such an extensive and negative appraisal of the entire cottage without contacting me once during the few short hours you were there.

    Fabulous stay

    We had a wonderful break at Buchan Ness. The cottage was cosy, well equipped and perfect for our family holiday. Sheila was a great host, always responding quickly and she was very helpful. My lighthouse daft 3 year old has already requested a return visit! 🙂
