Dutch Lighthouses: A Brief History

The Netherlands is home to many lighthouses, each with its own unique history. The first lighthouse in the Netherlands was built in 1421 on the island of Terschelling. It was a simple wooden structure that was destroyed by a storm just a few years later. In 1488, the first stone lighthouse in the Netherlands was built on the island of Vlieland. This lighthouse is still standing today and is known as the Hoge Vlieland Lighthouse. Throughout the centuries, many more lighthouses were built along the coast of the Netherlands. These lighthouses served as important navigational aids for ships travelling through Dutch waters. Today, most of these lighthouses are no longer in use but they remain an iconic part of the Dutch landscape.

Despite the fact that they are no longer needed for navigation, many of the lighthouses in the Netherlands are still actively maintained. Some of these lighthouses are open to the public and offer stunning views of the Dutch coast. Others have been converted into museums or hotels, offering visitors a unique and fascinating experience.

If you find yourself in the Netherlands, be sure to take some time to explore one of these iconic landmarks.
