Lighthouses in New Zealand have a long and varied history, with the first recorded lighthouse being built in 1864. Since then, lighthouses have played an important role in the safety of ships and sailors travelling around New Zealand’s coastlines. Today, there are over 30 operational lighthouses dotted around New Zealand’s coastline, each with their own unique story to tell.

The most famous lighthouse in New Zealand is probably Cape Reinga Lighthouse, which sits at the very top of the North Island. This lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1941 and is now one of the most popular tourist attractions in New Zealand. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for stunning views out over the Tasman Sea. Another well-known lighthouse is located on Great Barrier Island – this is arguably one of the most remote and beautiful lighthouses in New Zealand (and possibly even the world!). The island itself is only accessible by ferry or plane, making it a real adventure to get to. Once you arrive though, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views, native bush walks and some really great fishing spots!

If you’re interested in learning more about New Zealand’s fascinating maritime history (or just want to explore some truly stunning coastal scenery), then make sure you add a visit to one (or more!) of our amazing lighthouses onto your next NZ itinerary!
