Malta's lighthouses have been guiding sailors since the 16th century. The first recorded lighthouse on Malta was the Lippija Tower, built in 1487. Since then, a number of other lighthouses have been constructed on the islands of Malta and Gozo. These include Għajn Tuffieħa, Saint Agatha's Tower, Saint Elmo's Bastion and Fort Rinella - to name just a few. Each lighthouse has its own unique history and purpose. For example, Għajn Tuffieħa was originally built as a watchtower during the time of the Order of St John. Today, it is one of Malta's most popular tourist attractions due to its stunning panoramic views over Mellieha Bay and beyond.

Saint Agatha's Tower is another popular tourist spot which offers amazing views across Mdina and Rabat - two of Malta's ancient cities. The tower itself is actually part of an old 13th century fortification known as Borgo Vecchio (Old Town). It was named after Santa Agata, who is said to have been martyred here in 251 AD by being rolled down a hill in a barrel lined with nails! If you're interested in Maltese history and culture, then visiting one (or more) of these iconic lighthouses is definitely something you should add to your list!
